Triptych La familia informal (“The informal family”), acrylic on board, 1992, by the Peruvian artist Herman Braun-Vega
The pre-Columbian and colonial legacy are present in equal measure in contemporary Latin American art, both forming part of the complex task of defining and representing Latin American identity.
The work of Herman Braun-Vega can be included among that of other artists who use figuration in avant-garde art.
This Peruvian artist uses a naturalist language. His work contains continual references to traditional painting and avant-garde art alike, appropriating both languages and directly referring to them. In his works, he represents the reality of artistic and cultural miscegenation that takes place in Latin American countries.
The triptych La familia informal is part of the series Perú/España. Memorias al desnudo (“Peru/Spain, Memories Exposed”), created in 1992 for the exhibition held during the same year at the former Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid. For Braun-Vega, the entire American continent, both north and south, is today the reflection of all the blending that has taken place, resulting in the society we have today.
This work freely combines elements from a variety of periods and cultures with different artistic techniques and languages, all within the same piece. The artist’s intention is for the viewer to identify the elements represented, thus facilitating their own relationships and reflections.
