You are looking at La vendedora (“The Vendor”), by the Mexican artist Justina Fuentes.
Justina Fuentes was born in the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, in 1954, where she still lives.
She studied engraving with the master Juan Alcázar, who would later become her husband. In 2003 she was involved in creating the Museum of Oaxacan Painters (MUPO), and still works on its management team today.
Her work contains constant references to the feminine – the female figure, female faces, the Moon… Mermaids also appear a great deal, and these fantastic beings imbue her works with a magical atmosphere. In turn, they are reminiscent of the artist’s feelings about her childhood, when hip problems meant she was unable to walk until she was four years old. All of these elements can be found in the work before you.
With a career spanning over thirty years, she stopped painting in 2012 due to health matters caused by a recurring problem with her hip. She continues to work as a cultural manager while awaiting an operation to restore her mobility and painting career.
