You are looking at the works Chenteña (typical Oaxaca costume) and ¿Dentro del juego? (“In the Game?”), by the Mexican artist Irma Guerrero.
Irma Guerrero was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1956.
She was involved in the creation of the Rufino Tamayo Plastic Arts Workshop, where she studied engraving with Juan Alcázar. This can be seen in her use of the etching and aquatint technique.
During her career, she has exhibited in representative exhibitions of Oaxacan art individually in her hometown, as well as collectively inside and outside of Mexico.
Her works are based on the customs and traditions of Oaxaca, but with a feminist vision, speaking up for the role of women both in society and in art. This led her to also take part in exhibitions with a gender perspective within Mexican art.
In her works Chenteña and ¿Dentro del juego?, we see female figures dressed in traditional costumes and hairstyles. These women, shown in a domestic setting, are accompanied by elements that add a symbolic and critical component to the scene.
