Inhabiting roots. A sensory exhibition

Inhabiting roots. Sensory practices in territory

A sensory exhibition on identity, memory and territory

“Inhabiting roots” is the new sensory exhibition that leads from the (un)realities project. It is due to open on 27th June.

In 2025, we opened (un)realities, an educational curatorial project that reflects on the construction of individual and collective identity alike, through the use of an active visual ethnography and embodied mediation, giving rise to collective and collaborative artistic practices. The project presents two exhibitions alongside each other, each with an education programme based on activating models of thinking that use embodied practices to focus on emotions.

The starting point was the exhibition “Memories of the land. Leónidas Gambartes” (15th February 2025 – 30th May 2026), culminating in a second exhibition which will reflect the creations as well as processes and reflections developed by the community who took part in the activities and educational programme. This deeply enriching community process has helped bring about the new exhibition “Inhabiting roots. Sensory practices in territory” which takes the project another step forward, reflecting everything we have shared over more than a year.

The second stage of the (un)realities project

This new stage of the (un)realities project moves forward and delves deeper into the central themes of “Memories of the land” and the works of Leónidas Gambartes: territory, memory, ritual and identity. The pieces and installations found in this new exhibition are the result of processes and reflections on our own individual and collective identity that we have been able to receive and share with the community that has taken part in the different activities offered by the project. The material generated in these processes is at the heart of this exhibition, which has benefited from the involvement of a team of community curators made up of the participants of El_Laboratorio.

The participatory and cooperative nature of the project will continue to have a strong presence in this stage with a new educational programme due to last over a year, and will offer different activities and disciplines revolving around the key concepts of the project.

“Inhabiting roots. Sensory practices in territory” (27th June 2026)

Walk, observe, smell, feel

This sensory exhibition asks you to take a physical and emotional journey through a shared territory, where individual experiences intertwine to create a collective identity.

It arises from a participatory process carried out between February 2025 and March 2026, activated through “Memories of the land. Leónidas Gambartes” and the symbolic universe of Leónidas Gambartes, whose work covers notions of territory, memory and ritual.

The exhibition is organised into three areas: earthly, in transit, and sensorial, which provide structure to the space and offer a gradual experience of experientiality. With Gambartes’ work as the starting point, having planted the seed of the project and of the current exhibition, a selection of installations, audiovisual material and participatory experiences have been brought together to shape processes developed alongside the public during the first stage of the (un)realities project.

The route activates a sensory exploration that invites visitors to reflect on individual and collective identity and to travel through different ways of relating to the territory, memory and the body, combining natural elements, digital creation and sensory experiences. In this process, knowledge and memories are articulated collectively, configuring a space where that which is lived, shared and built together becomes visible.

A participatory and experiential exhibition

“Inhabiting roots” places the focus on the active participation of the public and on collective creation as tools of cultural and social transformation. We invite you to the opening of “Inhabiting roots” on 27th June, where an embodied ritual art piece will be presented, exploring belonging, individual identity and collective memory through the body and ancestral materials.

Don’t miss the opening event on 27th June!
